A mid-year IT review checklist is one of the most valuable things a small business can do in June — and this one takes about 15 minutes.
We’re halfway through 2026. Between the spring rush and whatever the fall has planned, mid-June is one of the few calm windows to take an honest look at your IT before something forces you to.
You don’t need a consultant or a long meeting for the first pass. Here’s a mid-year IT review checklist you can run yourself. If you’re in Central Florida or Metro Detroit and would like another perspective afterward, we’re always happy to help.

Make a quick list of the IT annoyances that have happened twice or more — the printer that drops off the network, the app that freezes every afternoon, the email that stopped syncing. Recurring problems are rarely random. They’re often a sign that something was patched over instead of properly resolved. Finding the root cause now is usually much less disruptive than dealing with it during your busiest week.
Walk the floor or ask around. Is there a team member who waits two minutes for their machine to boot, or who’s learned to “just restart it” a few times a day? Slow hardware creates small delays that add up over time. Those lost minutes affect productivity and can become a daily frustration for your team.
Not “do we have backups” — most businesses do. The better question is whether anyone has restored from one recently to confirm it actually works. A backup that’s never been tested shouldn’t be depended upon. Mid-year is a good time to perform a test restore so you know it will be there when you need it.
People have joined and left since January. For everyone who’s left: were their accounts and access fully removed? For everyone who’s joined: do they have only the access they actually need? Outdated accounts and unnecessary permissions remain two of the most common security risks for small businesses.
There’s usually one — the Windows upgrade, the move off the aging server, or the Wi-Fi that doesn’t quite reach the back office. Identify it now. The second half of the year is a good opportunity to plan and schedule those larger projects before they become urgent.
If you made it through the list without finding anything to address, that’s a great sign. If you identified a few items, you’re in good company. The purpose of a mid-year IT review checklist isn’t to find perfection — it’s to identify priorities while there’s still time to address them thoughtfully.
For many businesses, an outside perspective can also help identify issues that are easy to overlook during day-to-day operations. Regular reviews often uncover things like aging hardware, recurring workarounds, or inactive user accounts that simply haven’t been revisited in a while.
If you’re in Central Florida or Southeast Michigan and would like a second opinion, we’d be happy to walk through your environment with you. We’ll provide a straightforward review of your IT and security, explain any areas of concern, and help you prioritize what makes sense to address next. If you’d like to schedule a review, feel free to reach out or give us a call at 800.470.7001.
